Down Dames Raising Money for Demelzha...and a few eyebrows in the process!

Lullingstone Castle and the World Garden of Plants, Tom Hart Dyke 5,000 copies of ‘Down Dames in Rhyme’, a calendar featuring BBC Radio Kent stars, BBC gardener Tom Hart Dyke and the naked ladies of Down village (near Bromley in Kent) is being launched this week to raise money for children’s hospice Demelzha House.

This is the 2nd Down Dames calendar put together by the ladies group who meet socially in the village of Down in Kent. Head Dame, Barbara Stevens says; ‘ Our 2007 calendar is a follow on to our successful 2005 Down Dames for Harris Hospice. The theme for this year came from a friend who suggested that nursery rhymes would be applicable to Demelzha. So we have the ladies, in various poses, with well known faces from Kent, complete with an alternative nursery rhyme to accompany each shot’.

The ideas behind the photo shoots evolved as different ‘names’ from Kent came on board. BBC TV Gardener Tom Hart Dyke let the girls into his ‘World Garden of Plants’ at Lullingstone Castle in Kent (Scene of ‘Save Lullingstone Castle for BBC2). KEO Films (Makers of ‘Save Lullingstone Castle for BBC2) filmed the ladies at every stage of the process – from the posing, to the printing, to the unveiling of the calendar for Demelzha.

Uproariously funny scenes ensued as Tom stripped down to a loin cloth and used his favourite ‘Fatsia’ leaves to shield his dignity from his posing partner ‘June’. Tom said; ‘it was great fun and all in a good cause – it’s going to make for some funny scenes in our second television series on life at Lullingstone due out towards the end of this year’.

PJ and Harris from BBC Radio Kent’s ‘Saturday Carry On’ got into the swing of things with ‘April’. They gamely allowed the Down Dames into the studio to pose suing their CD’s as cover. Barbara says of PJ and Harris;’ they refused to take their clothes off, but they were great fun – and also very kind to let us into their studio in the first place!’

Pat Marsh the popular BBC broadcaster also got into the spirit of things and posed dressed as a farmer with ‘Down Dame’ Dot.

Barbara says of Pat; ‘ he came to visit us in Down on a boiling hot day. He was terrific, again he wouldn’t take his clothing off – but we dressed him as a farmer in dungarees and tied string round his waist. He entered into the spirit of it and pretended to milk his cow. It was especially nice that he came out to visit us in Down’.

Bob Ogley another well known name/face from Kent signed up to pose with the girls. Barbara Stevens said; ‘ Bob’s beard made him a natural for ‘Father Christmas’ and the December page.’

Calendars will be on sale at Coolings Nursery on 25th November.
